Pre-Turkey Climb

The day started at 7:30 AM and it was very cold, very very cold. But I was riding with my brother and we rarely get to ride together. The plan was to do a handicapped ride up Mt. Diablo, 11 miles and 3500 feet of climbing. The top three to the top and within 10% of their handicapped time podium. Pretty simple. My brother and I predicted 58 minutes and we were the second to last to go. My brother wanted to go under one hour and I was going to be his domestique. About 4 miles in, some yahoo came out of nowhere and attacked us and I gave chase but my brother did not follow. The yahoo died pretty quickly but inflicted his damage as my brother and I were now separated. I had a good rhythm going and did not want to lose it. My brother or my rhythm? I chose somewhere in between backing off a bit and shouting at my brother to close the gap. After about 5 minutes or so, I noticed he was falling back some more and I carried on. Oh well, so much for me being a domestique. I predicted 58 minutes and I climbed it in 58 minutes (my brother still PR'ed at one hour), but I was only the fifth person to the top, so no wine for me. However, my friend Erik was second to the top, and he was within 10% of his predicted time, winning $120 worth of wine. It got nice and warm by the time we got to the top which made the descent oh so much better. I couldn't think of a better way to start the Thanksgiving festivities.

Can't think of a better way to start the day? I can. It does involve riding, but there's no bike (unless you're REALLY creative).

Dude, a little more notice when rides like this are going down.

Will race for wine, or beer, or food, or ... well you get the point
