The Irony That Is Rest Week

I find it ironic that rest week is when my body feels the most tired and run-down. I had scheduled training days during this rest week, and by Thursday morning, I was quite resentful of my alarm when it sounded at 5:15 AM. I laid in bed thinking, how is this rest when I'm struggling to wake up at 5:00 AM to do an easy workout, and why the hell am I waking up at 5:00 AM just to do an easy workout. And wouldn't my time be better served giving my body some extra sleep and giving my mind a mental break from early AM workouts? The rationale seemed to work because I rolled over and went back to sleep.

Rest week from here on out will not involve training, but rather exercise. Training implies that the workouts are pre-meditated and planned, and usually there is a purpose for the workout like tempo run or hill repeats. Exercise is just working out whenever you feel like it. You know, when you go swim, bike, or run just for the fun of it, and just to break a good sweat. Rest week is now exercise week.

good call dude. I have been doing the exact same thing both on lighter/rest weeks and even daily during hard training. sure there are days when you have to slog out of bed and get the work done, but there is also a HUGE benefit to knowing when to turn the alarm off and go back to bed.
